Day 1 – Depart Cusco / KM 82 / Ayapata:
In the morning, trekkers will be picked up from their hotel with private transportation. Trekkers will take a stunning drive to the trailhead at KM 82 and enjoy stunning views of the Andes along the way. The chef will prepare breakfast at the trailhead, where trekkers must also display their passports at the checkpoint. Finally, trekkers start the first two and a half hours of the hike. It will be relatively flat until you arrive to the Inca site of Llactapata. This is where the trekkers will have the first taste of Incan culture as the tour guides will begin to explain the history of Peru and the Incas. After the first Inca lesson, it will be another hour and a half until the arrival to the lunch stop. After lunch, trekkers will have some time to rest and then continue for another two and a half hours until the first camp at Ayapata.
Trekking Distance: 14 Kilometers / 8.7 Miles
Camp Site Elevation: 3,300 Meters / 10,827 Feet
Day 2 – Ayapata / Dead Women’s Pass / Pacaymayo / Chaquicocha:
Trekkers will be woken up with a hot cup of coca tea at 4:45 AM, followed by a nutritious breakfast. At 6:15 AM, trekkers will begin hiking towards the highest point of the Inca Trail, Dead Women’s Pass (4,215 Meters / 13,828 Feet). It will be a four-hour climb through different microclimates with amazing views of the surrounding mountains. It is difficult trekking at this elevation, so there will be a lot of breaks along the way. Once trekkers reach the summit, the porters will be waiting with a hot glass of tea and time will be given to enjoy the spectacular views! Trekkers will then hike for another hour and a half downhill through Inca steps, until they arrive at the lunch spot. After lunch, trekkers will have another four hours, including breaks, to reach the campsite at Chaquicocha. Along the way, trekkers will visit two Inca sites, Runku Raccay and Sayacmarka. The day will conclude with dinner at the campsite.
Trekking Distance: 16 Kilometers / 9.94 Miles
Campsite Elevation: 3,600 Meters / 11,811 Feet
Day 3 – Chaquicocha / Phuyupatamarca / Winay Wayna:
Trekkers will be woken up with a hot cup of tea, followed by breakfast. Directly after, they will begin the two hour hike to the last pass of Phuyupatamarca, which is at 3,680 meters / 12,073 feet. This section has sweeping views of the Vilcabamba mountain range and Salkantay mountain. On the three-hour continuation hike to the campsite, two more Inca sites will be visited, Phuyupatamarca (Village above Clouds) and Intipata (Terraces of the Sun). Along the way, trekkers will discover different types of plants, flowers and birds in the forest. After lunch, trekkers may take a five minute walk to the most beautiful Inca site of the trail, Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young). This place is filled with impressive buildings and terraces. Around 5:30 p.m., trekkers will go back to the campsite for the last happy hour and dinner, followed by a small ceremony to say “thank you and good bye” to your amazing “green machine” porters.
Walking Distance: 10 Kilometers / 6.21 Miles
Camp Elevation: 2,600 Meters / 8,530 Feet
Day 4 – Winay Wayna / Sun Gate / Machu Picchu / Return to Cusco:
Breakfast will be served at 4 AM, and then trekkers will head to the Inca Trail check point. Walking this one-hour section to the Sun Gate is exciting because it is the first time Machu Picchu comes into view! After taking some photos, it will be another hour hike to the actual ruins of Machu Picchu. Upon arriving the entrance of Machu Picchu, trekkers must check-in at the control station and will have the option to store their daypacks. The guide will escort them through Machu Picchu for two hours, teaching them about this fascinating location! Once the guided tour is over, trekkers will have time to continue on their own, or if they have previously arranged to hike Huayna Picchu, they will begin then. Around 1:30 p.m. trekkers will depart from Machu Picchu and take the bus down to Machu Picchu Pueblo for lunch (at their own expense). The train from Machu Picchu Pueblo will be at 2:55 p.m. or 4:45 p.m., depending on availability. Trekkers will return to Ollantaytambo or Poroy station (depending on train availability) and transportation will be provided back to their Cusco hotel.
